Two young women both named Nana share a train ride to Tokyo. Nana Komatsu, nicknamed Hachi, is moving to the city to be near her boyfriend, while Nana Osaki is a punk singer chasing a career in the music industry. The two have little in common besides their name and age, but they get along quickly and end up sharing a flat. Their friendship develops as each pursues her own ambitions in Tokyo, one navigating romance and the other building a band. The film adapts Ai Yazawa's manga of the same name.
Kentaro Otani directed and wrote the screenplay, and this was his first feature-length film, well before Young Black Jack, Go, Masao!, Haru-san, and Tea for Three. Mika Nakashima, a singer known for her music career, plays Nana Osaki, while Aoi Miyazaki plays Nana Komatsu. The supporting cast includes Kenichi Matsuyama, Ryuhei Matsuda, Tetsuji Tamayama, and Tomomi Maruyama. The film was released in Japan in September 2005 and runs 113 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 4,300 votes, indicating a generally positive response from a modest number of viewers. On TMDB its rating is 6.8 out of 10 from about 111 votes, a smaller and similarly favourable sample.
