Khartoum

Khartoum is a British historical adventure film set in the Sudan in the 1880s, when a religious leader known as the Mahdi raises an uprising against Anglo-Egyptian rule and destroys an Egyptian force. With British interests at risk, Prime Minister Gladstone sends General Charles George Gordon to Khartoum. Ordered to arrange an evacuation, Gordon instead commits himself to defending the city and its inhabitants as the Mahdi's forces close in and the relief he has requested is slow to arrive.

Basil Dearden directed the film, which sits between Victim and The Assassination Bureau in his filmography, from a screenplay by Robert Ardrey and produced by Julian Blaustein. Charlton Heston plays Gordon, with Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi, Richard Johnson as Colonel Stewart, Ralph Richardson as Gladstone, Alexander Knox as Sir Evelyn Baring and Johnny Sekka as Khaleel. The production had a budget of 6 million dollars.
