Short description

Highwaymen is a revenge thriller built around a man hunting the driver who killed his wife. James "Rennie" Cray survives the hit-and-run that takes her life and spends years trying to find the culprit, a serial killer named Fargo who uses a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado to run down young women on the road. Released from prison, Cray crosses the country in pursuit of the car, joined by Molly Poole, a woman who survived an encounter with Fargo, and helped by a traffic officer. Fargo has modified the Eldorado into a weapon, and the chase becomes a test of whether Cray can anticipate how the killer thinks.

Robert Harmon directed the film, working from a screenplay by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell. It followed They (2002) in his filmography and came before Stone Cold (2005). Jim Caviezel plays Cray, with Rhona Mitra as Molly, Colm Feore as Fargo, Frankie Faison as Will Macklin, Gordon Currie as Ray Boone and Andrea Roth as Alexandra Farrow. The film runs 80 minutes and was produced by Millennium Media, New Line Cinema and Cornice Entertainment.

Highwaymen was released on 13 February 2004. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 238 votes, a modest audience response. The premise places it in the tradition of the road-bound pursuit film, a form Harmon had worked in before with The Hitcher.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The trial version of the film lasted nearly 2 hours and 5 minutes, but the theatrical release was cut down to 1 hour and 20 minutes. This was done to make the movie more dynamic. Scenes cut from the director's cut included Cray with his wife, Fargo killing his victims, Cray in prison, McLean arguing with his superiors, and Molly and Cray at the junkyard.
  • The final scene, in which McLean kills Fargo, was reshot despite objections from director Robert Harmon.
  • Jim Caviezel drives a vintage 1968 two-door Plymouth Barracuda equipped with a Chrysler RB 426 V8 Hemi engine. To reduce the car's weight, it featured ultra-light bumpers and fenders, and the soundproofing system and rear seats were removed. Only 50 such cars were ever built.
