Skin is a drama set in South Africa during the apartheid era, based on the true story of Sandra Laing, a girl born to two white Afrikaner parents but classified as "coloured" because of her dark skin. Her classification by the authorities shifts repeatedly, turning her life into a struggle between the white and non-white worlds. She is initially registered as white by the authorities, but her presence at a boarding school attended by her brother provokes hostility, and the school demands that she be reclassified as coloured. Her parents then begin a long fight for Sandra to keep the rights held by white South Africans.
The film was directed by Anthony Fabian as his first feature, followed more than a decade later by Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. Helen Crawley, Jessie Keyt and Helena Kriel wrote the screenplay. Sophie Okonedo plays Sandra Laing, with Sam Neill and Alice Krige as her parents, and Ella Ramangwane as the young Sandra. Tony Kgoroge and Morné Visser also appear among a credited cast of forty. The production was a British and South African co-production, made with support from South African film and development bodies.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly 3,800 votes. On TMDB, where voting is far lighter at around 50 votes, it has a rating of 6.4.
