Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever centers on a perpetually sour cat who lives in a pet shop inside a shopping mall and has grown used to being passed over while other animals find homes. During the holiday rush, a lonely twelve-year-old girl named Chrystal visits the store and discovers she can hear the cat's running commentary on everything around her. The two form an unlikely friendship that pulls them into a robbery and a series of escapades, with the girl's wish for a loyal friend and the cat's dim view of the season shaping the story as Christmas approaches.
The 2014 television film was directed by Tim Hill, who wrote the screenplay with Jeff Morris. It sits between Hop and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run in Hill's directing career, which also includes Muppets from Space, Max Keeble's Big Move, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Aubrey Plaza voices Grumpy Cat, and Megan Charpentier plays Chrystal, with Daniel Roebuck, David James Lewis, Russell Peters and Isaac Haig among the credited cast of 23. Running 90 minutes, the comedy was produced by Lighthouse Pictures, Lifetime, A+E Studios and Grumpy Cat Limited.
Reception was mixed. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.1/10 from around 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.6/10 from 86 votes. A critics' rating of 5/10 from 11 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than clearly above or below them.
