3 Generations

3 Generations centres on Ray, a New York teenager who has lived as a boy for years and now wants to begin hormone therapy. Because he is still a minor, the treatment requires the consent of both parents, which forces his single mother Maggie to track down the father she had cut out of their lives. Ray's grandmother Dolly, a music manager who shares the family's brownstone with her partner, also struggles to accept that she now has a grandson rather than a granddaughter, and the three generations have to work through their own identities before they can support Ray's.

Gaby Dellal directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nikole Beckwith, and produced it with Peter Saraf and Marc Turtletaub. It is her second feature as director, following her contribution to the 1999 anthology Tube Tales. Elle Fanning plays Ray, with Susan Sarandon as Dolly, Naomi Watts as Maggie, and Tate Donovan, Maria Dizzia and Sam Trammell among a cast of twenty-three. The film runs 87 minutes and was made for about 10 million dollars.

The film drew a mixed response: critics rated it 4.9 out of 10 across 44 reviews, while on IMDb and on TMDB audiences placed it somewhat higher, with TMDB showing 6.4 out of 10 from several hundred votes.
