The Finest Hours is a survival drama set in February 1952, when a severe winter storm strikes off the New England coast. Two oil tankers are torn apart in the heavy seas, leaving their crews in the water and on the broken remains of the ships. A small Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts receives word of the disaster and orders a rescue attempt, even though conditions make the mission extremely perilous.
The film follows Bernie Webber, a Coast Guard officer who takes a wooden motor lifeboat out into the storm with a small volunteer crew. At the same time, Ray Sybert, the senior surviving officer aboard the tanker SS Pendleton, works to keep the stranded section of his ship afloat and to keep his men alive while they wait for help.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film sits between Million Dollar Arm and I, Tonya in his filmography. Chris Pine plays Webber, with Casey Affleck as Sybert, supported by Ben Foster, Eric Bana, Holliday Grainger and John Ortiz. Made for a budget of around 80 million dollars, it earned roughly 52 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from about 74,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 from around 1,800 votes; the film critics' rating of 5.9 from 200 reviews is somewhat lower than either audience figure.
