Replicas is a science fiction thriller about William Foster, a neuroscientist who has been developing a way to transfer human consciousness into a computer. His work is meant for the Department of Defense, but after his wife and children are killed in a car accident, he turns his research toward bringing them back. With help from a colleague, he sets out to place their minds into new bodies, an effort that breaks government rules, scientific ethics and natural limits, and forces him to decide whom he can save. Keanu Reeves plays Foster, with Alice Eve as his wife Mona, Thomas Middleditch as his colleague Ed Whittle, and John Ortiz as Jones.
The film was directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, following his 2008 debut Traitor, and written by Chad St. John. It was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Stephen Hamel and Reeves himself, and made in the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Puerto Rico and the United States. Against a budget of 30 million dollars, it took in about 8 million worldwide, a commercial result well below its cost.
Opinion is divided. Critics were largely negative: on a critics' rating it holds 3.2 out of 10 from 57 reviews. Audiences are somewhat kinder, with 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 41,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from over 1,500 votes.
