Room
Short description
Room follows Jack, a five-year-old boy who has never known anything beyond the single windowless room where he was born and where he lives with his mother, Ma. For Jack, this cramped space is the whole world, filled with games, stories and routines his mother has created to give him a normal childhood. For Ma, it is a prison: she was abducted as a teenager and has been held there for seven years by a man Jack knows as Old Nick. As Jack's questions about their situation grow harder to answer, mother and son attempt an escape, and the film goes on to explore how both of them adjust to a world Jack has only ever seen on television.
Lenny Abrahamson directed the film, his fourth feature, following Garage and Frank and preceding The Little Stranger. Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay, adapting her own novel, with Ed Guiney and David Gross producing. Brie Larson plays Ma and Jacob Tremblay plays Jack, alongside Joan Allen, Sean Bridgers, Tom McCamus and William H. Macy. The production was a British, Irish, Canadian and American co-venture made for about 13 million dollars, and it took roughly 35 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 8/10 from 9,854 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 8.5/10 from 318 reviews, so critics rated it somewhat higher than audiences did.
What's left behind the scenes
- A film adaptation of Emma Donoghue's bestselling novel "Room" (2010). The idea for the book came to her when Donoghue learned about Felix, a five-year-old, one of the children involved in the so-called "Josef Fritzl case." For many years, Fritzl kept his own daughter locked in a basement, where she bore him seven children, including Felix.
- As Brie Larson later stated, she intentionally did not wash during filming.
- Old Nick is sometimes used as a name for the devil in Catholicism. In the film, Nick is the name of the main antagonist.
- In scenes where Jack has long hair, Jacob Tremblay wears a wig.
- Emma Watson, Rooney Mara, Shailene Woodley, and Mia Wasikowska were all considered for the role of Joy.
- Jacob Tremblay couldn't bring himself to yell at Brie Larson in the scene with the birthday cake that had no candles. The young actor was only able to do it when everyone present on set jumped around and yelled, showing him what to do and trying not to get in front of the cameras.
- A Phantom Planet poster can be seen in Joy's bedroom in her mother's house. The band's vocalist, Alex Greenwald, is dating Brie Larson.
- Actress Brie Larson secluded herself for a whole month and went on a very strict diet in order to better understand the psychological and physical state of her character.
- Filming took place in Toronto and Ontario, although the police officers in the film portray officers from the Akron Police Department in Akron, Ohio, USA.
- Production designer Ethan Tobman wanted snow to be included in the final episode, but using artificial snow would have exceeded the budget, so the idea had to be rejected. Fortunately, it actually snowed when filming began.
- At her parents' house, Ma Nancy is reading Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief" (2005). Max, one of the central characters in the book, spent a long time hiding from the fascists in the basement of the Hubermanns' house.
