Onegin
Short description
Onegin is a British-American drama set in early nineteenth-century Russia, following a wealthy, world-weary aristocrat who leaves Saint Petersburg for a country estate he has inherited. There he befriends a young poet, Vladimir Lensky, and is introduced to the Larina family, including Lensky's fiancee Olga and her bookish, romantic sister Tatyana. Tatyana falls deeply in love with Onegin, but he coldly turns her down. His careless flirtation with Olga provokes a quarrel with Lensky, and Onegin withdraws from society for several years. When he and Tatyana meet again, circumstances have changed for both of them. The film is based on Alexander Pushkin's verse novel, the source of Tchaikovsky's opera.
Martha Fiennes directed, working from a screenplay by Michael Ignatieff and Peter Ettedgui. Onegin was her first film as director; she later made Chromophobia. Ralph Fiennes plays the title role, with Liv Tyler as Tatyana, Toby Stephens as Lensky and Lena Headey as Olga, among twenty-one credited cast members. The production had a budget of about 14 million US dollars.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from twenty-seven reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 121 votes, indicating a modest, mixed reception from both critics and audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film features the waltz "On the Manchurian Hills" and the song "Oh, the viburnum blooms in the field by the stream" (an English adaptation); however, these compositions were written long after Pushkin's time.
- Some of the city scenes were indeed filmed in Saint Petersburg.
