Paula Bélier is sixteen and the only hearing member of her family. Her parents, Gigi and Rodolphe, and her younger brother Quentin are deaf, so she handles much of the communication with the outside world, from bank matters to selling the farm's cheese at the market. Encouraged by her music teacher, who has noticed her singing voice, she begins preparing for an audition with Radio France in Paris. Following that path would mean leaving the family that depends on her.
Eric Lartigau directed the film, his second feature after The Players in 2012 and one of four he has made, followed by #Iamhere in 2020 and This One Summer in 2023. The screenplay is by Stanislas Carré de Malberg and Victoria Bedos. Louane plays Paula, with Karin Viard and François Damiens as her parents, Eric Elmosnino as her music teacher, Roxane Duran and Ilian Bergala also starring. Twenty-four performers are credited.
Made for about 11 million dollars, the film took roughly 73 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 2,500. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 24 reviews sits below the audience scores, suggesting viewers responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.
