Fred P. Chaney is a stockbroker who inherits an unusual asset when his mother dies: a talking horse named Don, who also happens to know a great deal about the stock market. With Don feeding him winning tips, Fred starts doing well in the Chicago markets and earns the respect of fellow broker Allison Rowe. His stepfather Walter Sawyer, who works in the family brokerage and wants Fred out of the way, stands as an obstacle. As Fred's fortunes grow, a bad investment puts everything he has built with Don in jeopardy, leaving the pair to find a way back.
The film is a comedy directed by Michael Dinner, released in 1988. It followed his 1986 debut Off Beat, and was his second feature ahead of The Crew in 2000. Bobcat Goldthwait plays Fred, with John Candy providing the voice of the horse, and Dabney Coleman, Virginia Madsen, Cindy Pickett and Jim Metzler among the cast of roughly forty-six credited performers. The screenplay was written by Charlie Peters, Stephen Neigher and Hugo Gilbert, and the producers were Wendy Finerman and Steve Tisch.
Made for about 9 million dollars, it took in roughly 6 million worldwide, meaning it did not recover its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 10 from around 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.2 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 60 votes.
