A tracker in Montana is hired to pursue three escaped convicts into the mountains. He finds no men, only signs of violence and an arrow that seems out of place. Unable to convince the local sheriff, he seeks out an anthropologist and history professor, Lillian Sloan, who identifies the arrow as a type associated with Cheyenne warriors long thought to have disappeared from history after a nineteenth-century massacre. The two return to the wilderness together, looking for answers and for evidence that a group may have survived in isolation. What begins as a manhunt becomes a search for a people who, if they exist, have every reason to stay hidden.
Tab Murphy wrote and directed the film, his first feature as director; Joel B. Michaels produced it for Carolco Pictures, Savoy Pictures and Joel B. Michaels Productions. Tom Berenger plays Lewis Gates and Barbara Hershey plays Lillian Sloan, with Kurtwood Smith as Sheriff Deegan, Steve Reevis as Yellow Wolf, Andrew Miller as Briggs and Gregory Scott Cummins as Sears. The western adventure, with elements of mystery and thriller, runs 118 minutes.
Released in September 1995, the film holds a 7 out of 10 rating on IMDb across roughly 6,500 votes and a 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from about a hundred votes, indicating a warmer response from audiences than from critics, whose rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from thirteen reviews.
