The Bronze
Short description
Hope Annabelle Greggory won a bronze medal with the American women's gymnastics team in 2004 and has been living off that moment ever since. Now she is back in her small hometown, sleeping in her father Stan's basement, foul-mouthed and bitter, still wearing her old tracksuits and picking up small fees for personal appearances. Her local fame is threatened by Maggie Townsend, a talented young gymnast from the same town. Hope, who once trained under a coach who has since died, is drawn into Maggie's orbit, and has to decide what to do about a rival who could replace her.
The film is a comedy-drama directed by Bryan Buckley, his first feature after a career in commercials; his next film was The Pirates of Somalia. Melissa Rauch co-wrote the screenplay with Winston Rauch and stars as Hope, with Gary Cole as her father, Haley Lu Richardson as Maggie, Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan and Cecily Strong in supporting roles. It was produced by Duplass Brothers Productions and Stage 6 Films on a budget of about 4 million dollars.
Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from about 400 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 99 reviews is roughly in line with those audience scores, suggesting a mixed reception across the board.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sebastian Stan performed all the stunts himself, with the exception of two.
- Filming took 22 days.
- All the cafes and restaurants shown in the film actually exist. The house where Hope lived still stands on Brandt Avenue (still the same red, white, and blue), but the building that housed Pavlek's gym (formerly a pizzeria) was demolished in 2016.
- The character of Hope is entirely fictional, while the town of Amherst is real. Filming took place in Amherst and its surroundings during the summer of 2014.
- A body double was used for Melissa Rauch in the bedroom scene. Sebastian Stan filmed that episode himself.
- The screenplay for the film “Bronze” was written by the lead actress, Melissa Rauch, and her husband, Winston Rauch.
- Olympic medalist gymnast Dominique Moceanu appeared in a cameo role in the film “Bronze.” Although she was not born in Ohio, she spent much of her life there and currently resides near Cleveland. The film takes place in Amherst, a town near Cleveland.
- As in the film, Amherst, Ohio, is known in real life as the “sandstone capital of the world” (“sandstone” is “sandstone” in English). However, local sports teams are called the “Comets,” not the “Sandstoners.” Amherst College does not actually exist and its buildings were filmed on the campus of a local educational institution for the film.
- A bowling alley called "Park Lanes" is indeed located on Park Avenue near Main Street in Amherst.
- The film discusses the Olympic Games allegorically. Due to strict rules introduced by the International Olympic Committee, the word “Olympics” is not mentioned in the film, and Olympic symbols are not shown.
