At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul

A sinister undertaker known as Zé do Caixão terrorizes a small Brazilian town. Obsessed with fathering a child he considers superior, he decides his sterile wife must be eliminated so he can pursue another woman. His choice falls on Terezinha, the fiancée of his friend Antônio, and he stops at nothing to take her, while the townspeople remain too frightened to stand against him.

Released in 1964, the film is the first directed by José Mojica Marins, who co-wrote the screenplay with Magda Mei and also plays the lead role. Magda Mei appears as Terezinha, alongside Nivaldo Lima, Valéria Vasquez, Ilídio Martins Simões and Eucaris Moraes. Running 83 minutes, it blends horror with fantasy and thriller elements and launched the character that would define much of Marins's career; among the features he directed afterwards are The Virgin and the Tough Guy, Perversion and The Curse.

Audience response has been warmer than the critical one. On IMDb the film holds a 6.9 rating from roughly 4,500 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from about 125 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.2 from six reviews.
