Short description
Basic Instinct 2 follows Catherine Tramell, the American crime novelist first seen in the 1992 film, who is now living in London. After a car crash kills the man riding with her, Scotland Yard brings in psychiatrist Michael Glass to assess her mental state. The evaluating detective, Roy Washburn, wants her kept in custody, but Glass's report leads to her release. Catherine then seeks Glass out, and the encounter draws him into a game of seduction and suspicion in which he loses control of the boundaries he has set for himself.
Michael Caton-Jones directed the film, which came eighth in the directing career that began with Scandal in 1989 and includes Memphis Belle, Rob Roy and The Jackal. Henry Bean and Leora Barish wrote the screenplay, and Mario Kassar, Joel B. Michaels and Andrew G. Vajna produced. Sharon Stone returns as Catherine Tramell, with David Morrissey as Michael Glass, Charlotte Rampling as Milena Gardosh, David Thewlis as Roy Washburn, Stan Collymore as Kevin Franks and Indira Varma as Denise Glass. Thirty-nine cast members and 129 crew members are credited.
The film cost about 70 million US dollars to make and took roughly 39 million dollars worldwide, less than its budget. On IMDb it holds 4.4 out of 10 from around 44,000 votes, and on TMDB 5 out of 10 from about 867 votes. A critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from 153 reviews places the critical response below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place from April 18 to August 2005.
- Robert Downey Jr. was rejected by producers after a scandal related to the actor's drug addiction. Kurt Russell declined to participate in the project, fearing nudity before the cameras. Pierce Brosnan cited unpleasant moments in the script. Bruce Greenwood, Harrison Ford, Viggo Mortensen, Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, and Benjamin Bratt were also on the list of contenders for the male lead in the film.
- The temperamental Sharon announced her withdrawal from the project at the moment everything was ready to begin filming. Producers urgently began searching for a replacement, considering Demi Moore and Ashley Judd.
- David Cronenberg could have directed the film, but producer Mario Kassar removed David from the project because the director wanted to bring most of his film crew with him. After that, the director's position was offered to John McTiernan.
- Sharon Stone wanted to cast Catherine Deneuve in the project. Ultimately, the role went to Charlotte Rampling.
- The film was in pre-production as early as 2000 and 2001. Throughout this time, the project was plagued by two problems – the lack of a director and a leading man. Exhausted, Stone filed a lawsuit against the film's producers (Andrew Waina and Mario Cassar) for $100 million in damages and for the lack of new job offers due to the actress being “occupied” with the “half-dead” project. In 2004, to the surprise of many, Sharon withdrew her lawsuit and agreed to resume work on the film with the same producers.
- Jerry Goldsmith was supposed to head the work on the soundtrack. Unfortunately, shortly before the project launched, the celebrated composer passed away.
- The director of the original film, Paul Verhoeven, could have also directed the sequel but preferred to work in his homeland – the Netherlands.
