Code Unknown is a drama set in present-day Paris, where a brief encounter sets off a chain of events that draws together five people. Anne is an actress whose partner, Georges, works as a war photographer; his brother Jean arrives at Georges' building looking for the door code, but Anne is reluctant to give it to him. Frustrated, Jean confronts Amadou, a young man of African origin, and Maria, a Romanian immigrant living in France without papers. The argument escalates, police intervene, and the consequences ripple outward, linking the lives of those involved.

Michael Haneke wrote and directed the film, the seventh of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The Castle and preceding The Piano Teacher. Juliette Binoche plays Anne, with Thierry Neuvic as Georges, Alexandre Hamidi as Jean, Ona Lu Yenke as Amadou, Josef Bierbichler as Bauer and Maimouna Hélène Diarra as Aminate, among a credited cast of forty-eight. It was produced by Marin Karmitz and Alain Sarde.

The film holds an IMDb rating of 7.1 from over sixteen thousand votes and a TMDB rating of 6.7 from a smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating of 7.2 comes from fifty-one reviews, placing critical approval slightly above the audience scores.
