Blood Father centres on John Link, an ex-convict and recovering alcoholic living in a rundown trailer, who has had no part in raising his daughter. His estranged teenage daughter, Lydia, turns up asking for help after falling in with a drug dealer and getting caught up in the theft of money from a cartel. With killers pursuing her, she has nowhere else to turn, and John sets out to protect a daughter he barely knows, even if it means facing the criminal world he has tried to leave behind.
The film was directed by Jean-François Richet, whose earlier features include Assault on Precinct 13, the two-part Mesrine, and One Wild Moment. It was written by Peter Craig and Andrea Berloff, and stars Mel Gibson as John Link and Erin Moriarty as Lydia, with William H. Macy, Michael Parks, Thomas Mann and Diego Luna among the supporting cast. Produced by Wild Bunch, Why Not Productions and Lionsgate as a American-French co-production, it runs eighty-eight minutes.
Blood Father was released in August 2016. Against a budget of about thirteen million dollars, it took roughly seven million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from almost sixty-seven thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from a much smaller base. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 101 reviews places it slightly above both audience figures.
