Distant

Distant follows Mahmut, a photographer living in Istanbul whose marriage has ended and whose working life has settled into routine. When his younger relative Yusuf arrives from a rural part of Turkey, hoping to find a job on a ship and eventually go abroad, Mahmut reluctantly lets him stay in his apartment. The two men share a cramped winter existence in the city, and as Yusuf's search for work drags on without success, their different habits and expectations wear on the household.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan wrote, directed and produced the film, the second in his filmography after The Small Town. Muzaffer Özdemir plays Mahmut and Mehmet Emin Toprak plays Yusuf, with supporting roles for Zuhal Gencer, Nazan Kesal, Feridun Koç and Fatma Ceylan. The film runs 106 minutes and was released in December 2002.

The film drew a critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 46 reviews, while on IMDb and on TMDB, audience ratings are lower, at 7.1/10 from 266 votes on the latter. Among Ceylan's later films are Climates, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Winter Sleep, The Wild Pear Tree and About Dry Grasses.
