The Calcium Kid

Jimmy Connelly is a milkman in London who enjoys his job and spends time at a local gym, where he also boxes as an amateur. During a training session, he accidentally knocks out Pete Wright, the British fighter being prepared for a world title bout against American champion Jose Mendez. Promoter Herbie Bush seizes on the mishap and turns Jimmy into a replacement challenger, billing him as the Calcium Kid and making him a sudden public figure. Jimmy must get into shape for a fight far above his level while coping with attention he never asked for.

The Calcium Kid is a British comedy directed by Alex De Rakoff, who wrote the screenplay with Raymond Friel and Derek Boyle. It was produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, whose production companies had shepherded a long run of British comedies before this one. Orlando Bloom, better known by this point for fantasy and historical epics, plays Jimmy, with Omid Djalili as Herbie Bush, Michael Lerner as Artie Cohen, Michael Peña as Jose Mendez, Tamer Hassan as Pete Wright and Rafe Spall as Stan Parlour among a credited cast of 71.

Released in 2004 and running 89 minutes, the film drew a critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from five reviews, alongside 5.6 on IMDb from roughly 4,900 votes and 5.5 on TMDB from a much smaller sample of 64. The reception places it among the less favoured entries in the Working Title filmography.
