Short description

Michael is a 24-year-old who has cerebral palsy and long-term resident of the Carrigmore Residential Home for the Disabled, run by the formidable Eileen. His life is transformed when the maverick Rory O'Shea moves in.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a story by Irish writer Christian O’Reilly, who himself worked at a Dublin center for independent living, where he met Dermot Walsh, who had cerebral palsy.
  • James McAvoy wanted to audition for the role of Michael, but after a joint audition with Scottish actor Stephen Robertson, he realized that Robertson was better suited for the part.
  • During filming, the actors spent up to 12 hours a day in wheelchairs.
  • While preparing for the shoot, actor James McAvoy spent a lot of time talking with people who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He discovered that they prefer not to be noticed at all—as long as they are not pitied.
