The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler

Set during World War II, this drama follows Irena Sendler, a social worker in Warsaw. Driven by a lifelong sympathy for Jewish people, she works with the Polish underground to smuggle thousands of Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto to save them from Nazi extermination camps. While facing skepticism from her mother, her priest, and colleagues, she helps place the children in convents, orphanages, and Polish homes. To preserve their identities, she keeps detailed records hidden in jars buried in a garden. Her efforts eventually lead to her arrest by the Gestapo and a death sentence, though she is saved by a ransom payment.

The film was directed by John Kent Harrison, marking his third project following The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky and The Water Is Wide. The production was a collaboration between companies from Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and the United States. Anna Paquin stars in the title role, appearing alongside Goran Visnjic, Michelle Dockery, Danuta Stenka, Maja Ostaszewska, and Krzysztof Pieczyński.
