The War of the Gargantuas

The War of the Gargantuas follows a humanoid sea creature, Gaira, that emerges from the waters off Japan and begins attacking ships and the coastline near Tokyo. The monster was born from cells left behind by Frankenstein's monster, and its destructive path soon draws the attention of the Japanese military. A second creature, Sanda, a brown giant raised peacefully in the mountains, comes down to confront Gaira. The two are brothers, and their clash divides them while the city around them suffers.

Ishirō Honda directed the film, released in 1966. It is the nineteenth of the twenty-five films he directed in chronological order, arriving between Frankenstein Conquers the World in 1965 and King Kong Escapes in 1967. Honda also wrote the screenplay with Takeshi Kimura. The cast includes Kenji Sahara, Kumi Mizuno, Russ Tamblyn, Jun Tazaki, Kipp Hamilton and Yoshifumi Tajima, with twenty-three credited cast members and fifty-one credited crew. The production was a Japanese-American co-production from TOHO and United Productions of America, among others.
