Short description

Robin Hood is a 1922 American adventure romance set in medieval England. King Richard the Lion-Hearted leaves the country to join the Crusades, putting his brother, Prince John, in charge as regent. John turns out to be a merciless ruler who oppresses the English people, so Lady Marian sends word to her sweetheart, the Earl of Huntingdon, who has gone abroad with the king. He risks everything to return and resist the tyrant, but he and his companions end up declared outlaws. Taking on the identity of Robin Hood, he becomes a champion of the poor and downtrodden while evading the prince's men.

The film was directed by Allan Dwan, working from a screenplay he wrote with Edward Knoblock and Kenneth Davenport, with Douglas Fairbanks producing. Fairbanks also stars as Robin Hood, opposite Enid Bennett as Lady Marian. Wallace Beery plays King Richard, Sam De Grasse is Prince John, and Alan Hale appears as Little John, with Bud Geary as Will Scarlett. The production was a costly one for its day, made by Douglas Fairbanks Pictures, and its worldwide box office exceeded its outlay.

Robin Hood runs 133 minutes. It falls between Dwan's Fighting Odds (1917) and Zaza (1923) among the nine films of his listed here, a filmography whose later entries include Heidi, Sands of Iwo Jima and Silver Lode. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 2,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 60 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The project's art director, Wilfred Buckland, employed 500 workers, including carpenters and stonemasons, to build sets that were enormous for that time, including a great castle 200 meters long.
