Three adult sisters, Sachi, Yoshino and Chika, share a house in the coastal town of Kamakura, near Tokyo. Their father left the family years earlier, and they have long been out of contact with him. When he dies, the sisters travel to his funeral, where they meet Suzu, the teenage half-sister they never knew, now without anyone to care for her. They invite her to come and live with them, and the four begin a shared life together in the family home.
Hirokazu Kore-eda directed and wrote the screenplay, working with producers Hijiri Taguchi and Kaoru Matsuzaki. The film is the seventh of the sixteen features he has directed to date, following Like Father, Like Son and preceding After the Storm. Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa, Kaho and Suzu Hirose play the four sisters, with Ryo Kase and Ryohei Suzuki among the supporting cast.
Released in 2015, the film runs 127 minutes and was made as a co-production between Japan and France. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5 from more than sixteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from several hundred. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 124 reviews places it above both audience scores.
