Daryll Deever is a janitor in a New York office tower and an avid viewer of television news, fixated on reporter Tony Sokolow. When a killing occurs in the building where he works and Tony arrives to cover it, Daryll lets her believe he witnessed more than he did, hoping the claim will keep her interested in him. His story draws the attention of the people responsible for the crime, who take the supposed witness seriously and set out to silence him and anyone close to the investigation.

Peter Yates directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Steve Tesich. It was the eighth of the thirteen features Yates directed, following Breaking Away and preceding Krull. William Hurt plays Daryll and Sigourney Weaver plays Tony, with Christopher Plummer as Joseph, James Woods as Aldo Mercer, Irene Worth as Mrs. Sokolow and Kenneth McMillan as Mr. Deever. Thirty-one cast members and forty-six crew members are credited.

The film was released in February 1981 and runs 103 minutes. Made for a budget of nine million dollars, it returned six million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 6,300 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.6 from 131 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.2 from eleven reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
