Short description

Based on the real experiences of Ed Horman, Missing follows a conservative American businessman who travels to Chile after his son vanishes in the upheaval of the 1973 military coup. Accompanied by his daughter-in-law, Ed searches for answers, but finds that officials at the United States embassy and other institutions offer little help and obstruct his inquiries. The film is set in Santiago during the early days of the Pinochet regime, and the story centers on how a man who believed in his country's ideals confronts evidence that those in power may have had a hand in what happened to his son.

Costa-Gavras directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Donald Stewart, and the film sits between State of Siege and Betrayed in a filmography that includes Z, The Confession, Music Box and Amen. Jack Lemmon plays Ed Horman, with Sissy Spacek as Beth Horman and John Shea as Charles Horman, supported by Melanie Mayron, Charles Cioffi and David Clennon. Produced by Edward and Mildred Lewis for Universal and Polygram, the film had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took in roughly 14 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 7.2 rating from 444 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was banned in Chile from 1973 to 1990, while the dictator Augusto Pinochet (1915-2006) was in power.
  • A couple of days before the tanks were to be filmed, the leadership of the Mexican army revoked the filmmakers' permit to access weapons and military equipment. Local prop masters had to urgently construct tank mock-ups out of wood.
  • The film is based on the true story of Charles Horman, a young American journalist who disappeared in Chile following the bloody coup of September 11, 1973, which brought dictator Augusto Pinochet to power.
