Prophecy

Prophecy is a 1979 American horror and science fiction film about a doctor sent into the Maine wilderness to settle a conflict between a paper mill and a Native American tribe. Dr. Robert Verne and his wife Maggie arrive to investigate the dispute, in which the tribe accuses the mill of poisoning the water and the land. The company denies it, but the couple finds deformed wildlife in the woods, and Robert's decision to capture a bear cub for testing puts them in the path of a mutated grizzly.

John Frankenheimer directed the film, the ninth of the eighteen features he made, following Black Sunday and preceding The Challenge. David Seltzer wrote the screenplay, and Robert L. Rosen produced it for Paramount. Robert Foxworth and Talia Shire play the Vernes, with Armand Assante as John Hawks, Richard Dysart as Trevor Isley, Victoria Racimo as Ramona Hawks and George Clutesi as M'Rai. The film runs 102 minutes.

Made for 12 million dollars, Prophecy took in 54 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences have been cooler: it holds a 5.6 rating on IMDb from around 7,000 votes and a 5.4 on TMDB from a small number of votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 from 23 reviews places it close to those audience scores rather than above them.
