Short description
During the 1976 Soweto uprising, a white school teacher's life and values are threatened when he asks questions about the death of a young black boy who died in police custody.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Euzhan Palcy wanted to portray everything that happened on screen so truthfully that she went undercover to Soweto, South Africa, to gather information about the riots. Her passionate desire for social change made such an impression on Marlon Brando (1924-2004) that he agreed to play the civil rights lawyer. He even agreed to be paid the union scale of $4,000, which was significantly less than his usual fees. Donald Sutherland and Susan Sarandon also worked for reduced fees, and the film's budget was only $9 million.
