The Pope of Greenwich Village
Short description
Charlie is a small-time operator in New York's Little Italy, working at a restaurant while he and his girlfriend Diane dream of opening a business of their own. His cousin Paulie, a waiter with a talent for trouble, keeps pulling him into schemes, and this time Paulie has inside information about a horse he believes cannot lose. To raise the money they need, the two steal $150,000 from what looks like an ordinary private firm. The money turns out to belong to Eddie, a local Mafia boss, and was meant for bribing police officers, so the cousins soon have both organized crime and corrupt members of the New York City police department after them.
Stuart Rosenberg directed the film, the eighth in the chronological list of his features, following Brubaker. Vincent Patrick wrote the screenplay. Eric Roberts plays Paulie and Mickey Rourke plays Charlie, with Daryl Hannah as Diane and Geraldine Page, Kenneth McMillan and Tony Musante among the credited cast of fifty-one.
Released on June 22, 1984, the film runs 121 minutes and was made for $8 million, against a worldwide box office of about $7 million. On TMDB it holds 6.3/10 from 167 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.2/10 from 30 reviews, notably higher than the audience score.

- The film was shot and released approximately five years after the publication in 1979 of the novel of the same name by Vincent Patrick, which it was based on. Patrick also wrote the screenplay for the film.
- For her role in this film, Geraldine Page (1924-1987) was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress, despite appearing in only two scenes with a total duration of about 8 minutes.
- The film was indeed shot in Greenwich Village, as the title suggests. This is a neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York City.
- Michael Cimino was offered the chance to direct this film, but he declined. The project's producers were pressed for time, and as a favor to them, Cimino came to New York and completed all the preparatory work leading up to the actual filming. Afterward, Cimino was asked again to be the director, but he replied that given the filming schedule, they needed someone accustomed to working faster than he was. Stuart Rosenberg was appointed as the film's director.
