Short description

Jackie Chan's Project A - Part II continues the adventures of Sergeant Dragon Ma, the nineteenth-century Hong Kong marine officer who made his name by wiping out a pirate stronghold at sea. Now posted to a district on land, Ma is tasked with cleaning up corruption and breaking the hold of organised crime in his new territory. His investigation is complicated by the district's previous superintendent, Chun, whose record his superiors suspect but whose guilt is harder to prove than expected. Ma also crosses paths with anti-Manchu revolutionaries, pirates and loyalists to the old order, and his inquiries leave him exposed to forces on both sides of the law.

The film is the seventh Jackie Chan directed, following Armour of God and preceding Police Story 2, and he wrote the screenplay with Edward Tang. Chan again plays Ma, joined by Maggie Cheung, Rosamund Kwan, Carina Lau, David Lam Wai as Superintendent Chun and Bill Tung as Chief Inspector Tung. It was produced by Leonard Ho and released in 1987.

Reception was solid rather than exceptional. The worldwide box office came to roughly 19 million dollars, and audiences rate it around 7 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.1 on TMDB, while critics' reviews average 6.7 out of 10.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Stuntman Anthony Carpio, who participated in the filming, recounts in his interview on the DVD series "Legends of Hong Kong" that Mars doubles for Jackie Chan in some of the stunts.
  • Before Jackie runs towards the falling wall, the roofs of modern houses can be seen in the background.
  • The original version of the film differed drastically from the one we are able to watch now. It was seen only in Japan during preview screenings.
  • The pepper that Jackie Chan chews and uses as a weapon against attackers was real. Prop pepper was intended to be used, but the props department failed to produce it in time.
