Stephen Chow plays Sung Sai-Kit, a lawyer in Guangdong whose skill in court has made him wealthy but whose methods have earned him few friends. His wife, played by Anita Mui, is an eccentric woman with a talent for kung fu, and she presses him to give up a career spent defending guilty clients. The couple's personal losses push Sung toward retirement and a quieter life running an inn, but his reputation keeps drawing him back into legal battles, and a murder case sets him against powerful interests. The film mixes courtroom manoeuvring with martial arts comedy.
Johnnie To directed this 1992 Hong Kong production, the third of the 23 films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between All About Ah-Long and The Heroic Trio. The screenplay is by Sandy Shaw, with Clifton Ko Chi-Sum producing. Alongside Chow and Mui, the cast includes Ng Man-tat, Carrie Ng, Paul Chun and Leung Kar-yan, among 35 credited performers. Running 95 minutes, it blends action, comedy and crime.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.8 from around 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from about 120 votes. The two audience scores sit close together, indicating a modest but consistent response across both platforms. Released in July 1992, it remains one of the director's earlier features.
