Personal Velocity is a drama built around three separate portraits of women at turning points in their lives. Delia leaves an abusive husband and goes on the road with her three children. Greta, a book editor, reconsiders her marriage to a withdrawn man and begins to pursue ambitions she had set aside. Paula is a pregnant teenager who takes to the highway in search of adventure. Each woman is trying, in her own way, to escape the control of the men around her and start over.
Rebecca Miller wrote and directed the film, which was released in 2002 and runs 86 minutes. It is the first feature she directed, ahead of The Ballad of Jack and Rose, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Maggie's Plan and She Came to Me. The three leads are Kyra Sedgwick as Delia, Parker Posey as Greta and Fairuza Balk as Paula, with John Ventimiglia providing narration and Ron Leibman and Wallace Shawn in supporting roles. Gary Winick, Lemore Syvan and Alexis Alexanian produced, and the credited cast numbers 46.
The film is an American independent production made by IFC Productions, InDigEnt, Goldheart Pictures and Blue Magic Pictures, and it took about 1 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from 104 critics' reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from 46 votes, so critics rated it somewhat more favourably than the audience did.
