In Country

In Country follows Samantha Hughes, a teenager in a small Kentucky town who never knew her father, a soldier killed in Vietnam before she was born. She lives with her uncle Emmett, a Vietnam veteran who keeps to himself and avoids the past. Emmett spends time with other veterans, Tom, Earl and Pete, who carry their own difficulties from the war. Samantha presses for answers about her father, while Emmett resists revisiting what he went through. Samantha's mother has remarried and lives elsewhere, and it is her uncle and grandmother who make up her everyday world. Samantha's search for the father she never met becomes the film's central thread, set against a community that would rather not look back.

Norman Jewison directed, working from a screenplay by Frank Pierson and Cynthia Cidre. It was the fourteenth of the nineteen films he directed, following Moonstruck and preceding Only You. Bruce Willis plays Emmett, with Emily Lloyd as Samantha, Joan Allen as Irene, Kevin Anderson as Lonnie, John Terry as Tom and Peggy Rea as Mamaw, among a credited cast of forty-two. The production, from Warner Bros. Pictures, had a budget of 18 million US dollars and took about 4 million worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.9 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.6 from 59 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 28 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
