Troll
Short description
A family moves into an apartment building in San Francisco, where their young daughter is captured by a malevolent troll named Torok. Using a magical ring, the creature assumes the girl's appearance to hide in plain sight while attempting to transform the building and its residents into creatures and plants from his own realm. With the goal of world domination, the troll faces opposition from the girl's brother and a neighbor who is a witch.
Directed by John Carl Buechler, this fantasy horror film followed his 1984 project The Dungeonmaster. The cast features Noah Hathaway, Jenny Beck, and Phil Fondacaro, with supporting roles played by Michael Moriarty, Shelley Hack, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Produced by Empire Pictures and Altar Productions, the movie had a budget of 1 million USD and earned 5 million USD at the worldwide box office.
Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 4.6/10 on IMDb based on 13,000 votes and a 5.1/10 on TMDB from 275 votes. These scores are slightly higher than the film critics' rating of 3.7/10 from 11 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to the plot, the film takes place in San Francisco, but it was filmed in Italy, in the vicinity of Rome. The film's main cinematographer and several minor actors are Italian.
- Despite the titles, "Troll 2" and "Troll 3" are not sequels to "Troll." However, this does not prevent distributors from releasing the "first" and "second" parts under one cover.
- Since the main character of the Harry Potter series has the same name as the two main characters of 'Troll', the film's creators suspect J.K. Rowling of plagiarism. In 2011, it was announced that 'Troll' might have a prequel with the working title 'The Troll: Rise of Harry Potter'. At the same time, neither Rowling nor Warner Bros. will be able to sue over the use of the phrase 'Harry Potter'.
