Short description
Amy is a documentary about the British singer Amy Winehouse, tracing her life from her teenage years, when her vocal ability was already evident, through her rise to global fame and the personal turmoil that followed. Assembled largely from archival footage and audio interviews with family, friends and colleagues, the film lets Winehouse's own words and music carry much of the story, alongside the recollections of those close to her. Her jazz and soul background, the intensity of her songwriting and the pressures of sudden celebrity form the core of the portrait, which follows her career through two albums and her death in 2011 at the age of twenty-seven.
Asif Kapadia directed and wrote the film, with James Gay-Rees producing. It sits between Senna, his 2010 documentary, and Diego Maradona, released in 2019, in a run of films he has directed. Among those appearing as themselves are Mark Ronson, Tony Bennett, Pete Doherty, Juliette Ashby and Yasiin Bey, while Winehouse is present through archive material.
The film was released in July 2015 and took about 24 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a documentary. Audiences rate it 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.6 out of 10 on TMDB, while the critics' rating stands at 8.4 out of 10, noticeably higher than either audience score.
What's left behind the scenes
- Amy Winehouse’s closest relatives were initially willing to cooperate with the film’s producers and director, as they had heard about the success of their previous documentary ‘Senna’ (2010). They promised the filmmakers access to archival footage of Amy and her family. However, Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, soon noticed that the filmmakers were paying far more attention to the negative aspects of Amy’s life than to the positive ones, and that the archival footage had been edited in such a way that the resulting story distorted the facts, especially the last three years of Amy’s life. Mitch Winehouse said that Amy’s fans would be better off treating the film as a collection of rare footage featuring her, and that they should not pay attention to the image of Amy presented in the film.
