The Crush
Short description
Nick Eliot, a young journalist, finds his life going well: he has a job at a magazine, a relationship with Amy, a photographer, and a quiet house he rents from a wealthy couple. The arrangement turns complicated when the couple's fourteen-year-old daughter, Adrian, becomes infatuated with him. When he makes clear he does not return her feelings, her attachment hardens into something possessive and vindictive, and Nick finds himself the target of a campaign he cannot easily escape.
The Crush was released in 1993 and runs 89 minutes. It was written and directed by Alan Shapiro, and was the first of two films he directed, followed by Flipper in 1996. James G. Robinson produced for Warner Bros. Pictures and Morgan Creek. Cary Elwes plays Nick, with Alicia Silverstone as Adrian, Jennifer Rubin as Amy, Kurtwood Smith and Gwynyth Walsh as Adrian's parents, and Amber Benson as Cheyenne.
Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 14 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from 574 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4/10 from 29 reviews places it well below the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of the movie, Alicia Silverstone turned 15, gained emancipation from her parents, and became financially independent. She also came out from under child labor laws, which would have limited the amount of time she could dedicate to filming.
- According to director and screenwriter Alan Shapiro, the film is based on real events. After graduating from college, Shapiro rented a guesthouse from a married couple in Los Angeles. At the time, Shapiro was trying to write scripts for Hollywood studios, but he was constantly distracted by the homeowners' underage daughter, Darian, who was in love with him. Shapiro, however, wanted nothing to do with her and rejected her advances. One day he returned home and found an obscenity scratched onto his recently purchased new car. Shapiro turned to the girl's parents, but she denied everything, and they preferred to believe her. They didn't even believe him when Darian's classmate corroborated his story. In the end, Shapiro moved out and never saw Darian again. Many years later, Shapiro's wife reminded him of the incident and suggested it could make a good thriller, so he began writing the screenplay for "The Crush."
- A body double was used for the nude scenes in place of Alicia Silverstone, as she was a minor at the time.
- The film's original title was "Teenage from Hell."
- Jennifer Rubin's character's wardrobe consisted mostly of her own clothes.
- When the film was edited for television, the name of Alicia Silverstone's character was changed from Darian to Adrian. Alan Shapiro wrote the script based on memories of his own past, but the woman he wrote about sued him because she bore the same name as his “fictional” heroine.
