Short description
Ben Cash has raised his six children in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, far from towns and schools. He trains them physically and intellectually: they hunt and survive in the wild, study languages and science, and debate literature and history, all shaped by his rejection of mainstream American life. When his wife dies, the family must leave their isolated home and travel to her funeral, where her parents and the ordinary world await. The journey forces Ben to question whether the education he built for his children has prepared them or cut them off, and the children begin to weigh their father's ideals against the lives they have never known.
Captain Fantastic was released in July 2016. Matt Ross directed and wrote the screenplay, and Viggo Mortensen plays Ben Cash. The credited cast of 28 includes George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton and Shree Crooks as the children. The film is a US production from Electric City Entertainment and ShivHans Pictures, produced by Monica Levinson, Lynette Howell Taylor and Jamie Patricof.
Made for about 5 million dollars, it took roughly 23 million worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. It holds a 7.8 on IMDb from 250,000 votes and a 7.9 on TMDB from 6,977 votes, while the critics' score of 7.2 from 226 reviews is slightly lower than both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Matt Ross signed contracts with the child actors prohibiting them from eating sweets or fast food until the end of filming.
- The film's opening scenes were shot in North Cascades National Park in northern Washington state. Mount Shuksan is clearly visible in the background, east of Mount Baker.
- At the end of the film, a thermos with a worn and faded red and blue logo is visible on screen. This is the logo and colors of Club Atletico San Lorenzo de Almagro from Buenos Aires, Viggo Mortensen's favorite football team. The actor lived in Argentina for many years. In Brian De Palma's "Carlito's Way," the same colors can be seen on the wheelchair used by Mortensen's character.
- In the final scenes of the film, Viggo Mortensen's character is wearing a t-shirt with the inscription "Jesse Jackson '88". Jesse Jackson is a public figure and human rights activist who ran for President of the United States as a Democrat in 1984 and 1988.
- Preparing for the role of Bo, George MacKay practiced yoga for 3-4 hours a day. The actor later said that this was the most difficult part of working on the film.
- Viggo Mortensen's character wears a pendant depicting Thor's hammer. Thor's hammer, one of the main deities in Scandinavian mythology, possessed supernatural properties. Numerous similar pendants have been discovered during archaeological excavations in Scandinavia and the British Isles. They date from the 9th to 11th centuries AD, the time of the Viking raids. Some scholars believe that those who believed in the Scandinavian gods began to wear such pendants in opposition to Christian priests and their crosses.
