Short description
Buster Moon is a koala who runs a grand old theater that has fallen on hard times. Facing debts and the threat of losing the building, he hatches a plan to stage a singing competition, hoping the publicity will bring in enough money to save it. The contest draws a wide range of hopefuls: a stressed pig raising a large litter of piglets, a teenage elephant paralyzed by stage fright, a young gorilla tied to a family of criminals, a punk porcupine trying to break away from a controlling boyfriend, and a dishonest but gifted mouse. Buster's loyal friend Eddie, a sheep, gets pulled into helping him pull the show together.
Garth Jennings directed and wrote the screenplay, with Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy producing. It was Jennings's third feature, following The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Son of Rambow, and precedes Madame, Sing 2, Sing: Thriller and Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore? in his filmography. The voice cast includes Matthew McConaughey as Buster, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly and Taron Egerton, among 65 credited cast members and 180 credited crew.
Released in November 2016, the film cost about 75 million USD and took roughly 634 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 211,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1/10 from about 8,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4/10 from 187 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.

- Each song from the final performance has its own implicit meaning for the cartoon characters. Rosita’s song with Gunter expresses her desire to escape the family routine. Johnny’s song reflects his experiences after the breakup with his father. Mike’s song suits both himself, summing up his life (first and last verses), and Johnny’s father, who realized his mistake and came to reconcile with his son (second verse). Mina’s song expresses her overcoming of her own fears.
