Amnesia

Amnesia is a drama set on Ibiza in the early 1990s. Jo, a young composer from Berlin, arrives on the island hoping to take part in the emerging electronic music scene, ideally by finding work as a DJ at a nightclub there. He becomes curious about Martha, an older woman who has lived alone in her house by the sea for forty years, and one night he knocks on her door. A friendship forms between them, though Martha guards her past closely: she no longer plays the cello standing in her home and refuses to speak German, the language she grew up with. Jo gradually draws her into his world of techno music, and Martha begins to reconsider the life she had settled into.

Barbet Schroeder directed the film, which came after Murder by Numbers (2002) in the chronological list of his features. The screenplay was written by Emilie Bickerton, Peter Steinbach and Susan Hoffman, and the film was produced by Margaret Ménégoz and Ruth Waldburger. Max Riemelt plays Jo and Marthe Keller plays Martha, with Bruno Ganz, Corinna Kirchhoff, Marie Leuenberger and Fermí Reixach in supporting roles. The film runs 96 minutes and was made in France and Switzerland.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from around 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audience scores sit close to each other, in the middling range, with the larger IMDb sample giving the steadier picture of how viewers received it.
