Short description

A lethal virus spreads through a small American town, causing a large portion of the population to be wiped out or transformed into aggressive creatures. The town is placed under quarantine, trapping residents in their homes. Emma, a teenager who records her life for a school project, manages her family's survival within their house. The situation becomes critical when the infection enters her home, forcing Emma to choose between her own safety and protecting her infected sister.

The film was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who previously co-directed Paranormal Activity 3, Paranormal Activity 4, and Nerve. This project sits fourth in their chronological list of directorial works, followed by Project Power, Secret Headquarters, and Who Is Sabato De Sarno? A Gucci Story. The cast features Sofia Black-D'Elia as Emma Drakeford and Lio Tipton as Stacey Drakeford, alongside Travis Tope, Machine Gun Kelly, Michael Kelly, and John Cothran.

Produced by Blumhouse Productions, Dimension Films, IM Global Octane, and Busted Shark Productions, this science fiction horror drama has a runtime of 86 minutes. Based on 594 votes, the movie holds a rating of 5.8/10 on TMDB.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The fact that school lessons cover Toxoplasma gondii (a single-celled parasitic microorganism capable of causing toxoplasmosis) and fly larvae is the absolute truth, not a product of the screenwriters' imagination.
  • In May 2015, it was announced that the film would be released in theaters in February 2016, but it was not released until July 2016, going straight to video.
  • The image of the virus shown in the news program is the same one featured in Wolfgang Petersen's 1995 thriller "Outbreak," with the red color simply changed to blue. The fictional Motaba virus from "Outbreak" is very similar to the Ebola virus.
  • The film uses archival footage in which US President Barack Obama speaks about an epidemic; however, he is referring to the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa between December 2013 and June 2016.
