American Made

American Made tells the story of Barry Seal, a commercial airline pilot in the United States who is recruited by a CIA contact named Monty Schafer to fly covert missions in Central America. The work soon draws him into the drug trade, and he begins transporting contraband for South American traffickers, including the Medellín cartel, while continuing to serve his government handlers. The money and the lifestyle that come with it are considerable, but running operations on both sides puts Seal, and eventually his family, in danger as authorities and his criminal employers close in. The film is based on Seal's real life and is set largely in the 1980s.

Doug Liman directed the film from a screenplay by Gary Spinelli, with Brian Grazer, Kim Roth and Doug Davison producing. It was Liman's eighth film as director, following Edge of Tomorrow and preceding The Wall, and Tom Cruise stars as Seal alongside Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Caleb Landry Jones and Lola Kirke.

Released in August 2017, the film runs 115 minutes and mixes action, comedy, crime and drama. Made for about 50 million dollars, it took in roughly 135 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 232,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from about 5,100 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 6.9/10 from 267 reviews, placing audience and critical responses close together.
