It's Only the End of the World

Louis is a successful writer who has been away from his hometown for twelve years. He returns to see his family, intending to tell them that he is terminally ill and does not have long to live. The visit unfolds over a single afternoon among five people in the family home: his mother, his younger sister, his older brother and his brother's wife. The reunion he hoped for does not go as planned, as old tensions and unresolved conflicts surface, and none of his relatives seems willing or able to listen to what he has come to say.

The film is an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce's play of the same name. Xavier Dolan directed it and wrote the screenplay, with Nathanaël Karmitz and Sylvain Corbeil producing alongside him. Gaspard Ulliel plays Louis, with Nathalie Baye, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard and Léa Seydoux in the other main roles. It is the sixth feature in Dolan's directing career, following I Killed My Mother, Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Mommy and Tom at the Farm.

It's Only the End of the World was released in 2016 and runs 99 minutes. Made for about 7 million USD, it took roughly 9 million USD worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 7.2/10 rating from over 1,600 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 5.4/10 from 86 reviews, a notable gap between professional and audience response.
