Loving Vincent

Set in France in the summer of 1891, about a year after Vincent van Gogh's death, the film follows Armand Roulin, the son of a postal worker who knew the painter. Asked to deliver a letter the artist wrote to his brother Theo, Armand sets out reluctantly, but what he learns along the way changes his view of van Gogh. He begins to question how the painter actually died, and his errand turns into an inquiry into the circumstances of that death, pursued through the people who were close to him.

Loving Vincent is an animated drama directed by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, who also wrote the screenplay with Jacek Dehnel. It is their first feature, followed by The Peasants in 2023. The hand-painted animation, made in van Gogh's own style, serves a story about his life and the mystery surrounding his end. Douglas Booth voices Armand, with Robert Gulaczyk as van Gogh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Helen McCrory, Saoirse Ronan and Chris O'Dowd among the cast.

Made for about 5 million US dollars, the film went on to take roughly 42 million worldwide, a strong return for an independent animated release. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, and on TMDB 8 out of 10 from roughly 2,700 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 161 reviews. Audience scores are therefore slightly higher than the critical average, and the vote counts show a wide viewership beyond the usual art-house audience.
