Nightfall is a 1956 crime thriller about James Vanning, an innocent man who becomes a fugitive after he is linked to a murder and a robbery he did not commit. Two dangerous criminals, John and Red, believe he has the money from a bank job, but Vanning lost the loot in a snowstorm in the Wyoming wilderness and cannot remember exactly where. As he tries to piece together what happened, the killers close in, along with an insurance investigator, and a woman named Marie Gardner becomes entangled in his flight.
Jacques Tourneur directed the film, which sits between Wichita (1955) and Night of the Demon (1957) in his filmography. Stirling Silliphant wrote the screenplay, and Ted Richmond produced it for Columbia Pictures and Copa Productions. Aldo Ray plays Vanning, with Anne Bancroft as Marie, Brian Keith as John, James Gregory as Ben Fraser, Jocelyn Brando as Laura Fraser, and Frank Albertson as Dr. Edward Gurston. The credited cast numbers 28.
The film runs 79 minutes and blends crime, romance and thriller elements. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 107 votes, indicating a modest but favourable response from users of that platform.
