The Adventures of Huck Finn

The Adventures of Huck Finn follows a restless boy living along the Mississippi River in the pre-Civil War American South. When his estranged father returns and seizes him, hoping to get hold of money the boy has inherited, Huck escapes by faking his own death. He then joins Jim, an enslaved man who is fleeing after learning he is to be sold, and the two travel downriver by raft while trying to avoid anyone who might capture Jim and return him to bondage. The journey is one of close calls and encounters with strangers, and it gradually forges a strong friendship between the pair, testing Huck's sense of loyalty as he decides how far he will go to protect Jim.

The film is a Walt Disney Pictures release directed and written by Stephen Sommers, and it was the first feature he directed. It was made for about 7 million dollars and took roughly 24 million at the worldwide box office. Elijah Wood plays Huck, with Courtney B. Vance as Jim, and the cast also includes Robbie Coltrane, Jason Robards, Ron Perlman and Dana Ivey among 38 credited performers.

Ratings are modest and consistent: on IMDb it holds 6.2 from about 9,800 votes, on TMDB 6.2 from 212 votes, and film critics gave it 6 out of 10 across 16 reviews, so critics and audiences broadly agree on its quality. Sommers followed it with The Jungle Book the next year and later with Deep Rising, The Mummy and its sequel, Van Helsing, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Odd Thomas.
