City Girl follows Lem, a farmer's son from rural Minnesota who travels to Chicago to sell his family's wheat harvest. There he meets Kate, a waitress, and the two fall in love and marry. Kate hopes the marriage will give her a better life than the city offers, but when the couple returns to the farm, Lem's stern father greets his new daughter-in-law with suspicion, and the wheat fields become the setting for a struggle between father and son over the young marriage.
F. W. Murnau directed the film, which came after Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans in his run of features and before Tabu: A Story of the South Seas. Marion Orth and Berthold Viertel wrote the screenplay, William Fox produced, and Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan star as Lem and Kate, with David Torrence as Lem's father, Edith Yorke as his mother, Guinn "Big Boy" Williams as Reaper and Anne Shirley as Marie Tustine. It runs 88 minutes.
The film holds a 7.7 rating on IMDb from around 4,000 votes and a 7.5 on TMDB from roughly a hundred votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.4 from eight reviews, so audiences rate it more favorably than critics do.
