Tommy Fawkes is an aspiring comedian struggling to find success while living in the shadow of his famous father. After a disastrous debut performance in Las Vegas, Tommy returns to Blackpool, England, where he spent his childhood and where his father first started his career. While searching for new inspiration and a potential comedy partner in the town, Tommy encounters a talented clown named Jack Parker and his family, who are forbidden from performing following a tragedy. This meeting leads Tommy to uncover a hidden connection between the Parkers and his father.

Directed by Peter Chelsom, this comedy was the second film in his career, following Hear My Song. The screenplay was written by Chelsom and Peter Flannery. The movie stars Oliver Platt as the protagonist, Jerry Lewis as his father, and Lee Evans as Jack Parker, with a supporting cast that includes Leslie Caron, Richard Griffiths, and Oliver Reed.
