An improv troupe calling itself The Commune has been performing in the same New York theater for years, with its six members doubling as close friends. When the venue is sold and the group loses its lease, each of them faces the question of whether to keep the troupe going. Around the same time, one member is cast on a major television comedy show and becomes famous, which stirs envy among the others and puts their friendships under strain as they weigh loyalty to the group against their own ambitions.
Mike Birbiglia directed, wrote and stars in this 2016 comedy-drama, his second feature after Sleepwalk with Me in 2012. Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Chris Gethard, Kate Micucci and Tami Sagher play the other members of the troupe, with Birbiglia as Miles, the group's founder. The film reflects the experience of its maker, a comedian who came up through improv. It runs 92 minutes and was produced by Cold Iron Pictures and The Film Arcade on a budget of about 2 million dollars, earning roughly twice that worldwide.
Reception split sharply by audience. Critics gave it strong marks, with a rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 135 reviews. General viewers were less enthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 424 votes.
