Short description

Pola X centres on Pierre, a young writer living a privileged life with his mother in a château in Normandy. Engaged to his cousin Lucie and enjoying the success of an anonymously published novel, he seems set for a comfortable future. One night, while riding to see Lucie, he encounters a woman of striking, sorrowful beauty at the edge of a forest. Speaking with a strong Eastern European accent, she tells him she is Isabelle, his sister, and that he is not an only child. Shaken by the revelation, Pierre abandons his fiancée and his devoted mother and leaves with Isabelle for Paris, where they fall in with a mysterious circle on the city's outskirts. The bond between them soon moves beyond anything brotherly.

Leos Carax directed and co-wrote the film with Jean-Pol Fargeau and Lauren Sedofsky, following The Lovers on the Bridge. Guillaume Depardieu plays Pierre opposite Yekaterina Golubeva as Isabelle, with Catherine Deneuve as Marie, Delphine Chuillot as Lucie, Laurent Lucas and Patachou in support. The production, mounted across Germany, France, Switzerland and Japan, was made on a budget of about 72 million dollars, a very large sum for a film of this kind.

Pola X holds an IMDb rating of 5.7 from around 5,700 votes and a TMDB rating of 5.5 from about 106 votes, while critics rated it 6.5 from 25 reviews, somewhat higher than general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The "X" in the title denotes the number of times the plot has been rewritten.
  • POLA is an acronym for “Pierre ou les ambiguites” or “Pierre, or Ambiguities,” a novel by Herman Melville (1819-1891).
